Factors affecting your choice of Boiler

The main factors that are likely to affect your final boiler choice are:

  • Hot Water requirements – How the boiler heats the Domestic Hot Water (DHW) that powers your baths, showers and taps.
  • Type of Fuel – Which fuel the boiler requires – Gas, LPG or Oil.
  • Boiler Mount – Whether you want the boiler to be mounted on a Wall or Floor (Freestanding)
  • Boiler Location – Where you want the boiler installed. Internal (Loft, Kitchen etc). External (Garage, Garden etc)

Combi Boilers

The key characteristics of a Combi Boiler are:

  • Domestic Hot Water – Provided by heating the mains cold water supply as it passes through the boiler when you turn on an outlet tap or shower.
  • Type of Fuel – Available for Gas, LPG or Oil.
  • Boiler Mounted on – Wall (Gas/LPG). Floor (Gas/LPG/Oil).
  • Boiler Location – Internal incl loft/garage (Gas/LPG). External (Oil).
  • Advantages – No Cold Water Storage Tank or Hot Water Cylinder needed, so you save space/cost.  Simple, compact boiler construction. Lower DHW running cost due to no DHW storage.
  • Best suited to – Small to medium sized homes with good water pressure

System Boilers

The key characteristics of a System Boiler are:

  • Domestic Hot Water – Provided from water stored in a Hot Water Cylinder under mains water pressure.  Heated indirectly by passing hot water from the boiler through a coil in the Cylinder.
  • Type of Fuel – Available for Gas, LPG or Oil.
  • Boiler Mounted on – Wall (Gas/LPG). Floor (Oil).
  • Boiler Location – Internal incl loft/garage (Gas/LPG). External (Oil).
  • Advantages – No Cold Water Storage Tank needed (save space/cost).  Main Heating parts stored within boiler (quicker/easier to install). Water storage means lots of hot water available for use.
  • Best suited to – Homes with more than one bathroom.

Regular Boilers

Also known as ‘Traditional’ or ‘Heat only’, existing older systems typically used Regular Boilers.  Their key characteristics are:

  • Domestic Hot Water – Mains cold water feeds a Cold Water Storage (CWS) tank at high level (usually in the loft).  This feeds a HW Cylinder to provide DHW at the taps.  DHW is heated indirectly by passing hot water from the boiler through a coil in the Cylinder.
  • Type of Fuel – Available for Gas, LPG or Oil.
  • Boiler Mounted on – Wall (Gas/LPG). Floor (Gas/LPG/Oil).
  • Boiler Location – Internal incl loft/garage (Gas/LPG). External (Oil).
  • Advantages – Easily replace existing Regular boilers as components already in place (cost/speed). Lower system pressure than Combi/System boilers means more suited to older radiators. Water storage means can feed many outlets concurrently.
  • Best suited to – Existing homes which already have this type of boiler.  Homes with multiple bathrooms or require concurrent showers/baths. Homes with low mains water pressure.
